Product Description

Jarrow Formulas green coffee bean extract is derived from green (meaning unroasted) coffee beans and offers a concentrated source of plant-derived antioxidants, especially chlorogenic acids. Chlorogenic acids have been shown to promote glucose regulation and balance by inhibiting the activity of glucose-6-phosphatase (an enzyme involved in the release of glucose from liver stores) thus slowing the release of glucose into the blood. Clinical trials have demonstrated that the chlorogenic acids found in Jarrow Formulas green coffee bean extract support weight management.

4Took away afternoon fog
By The geacher
I, too, first heard about this product on the Dr. Oz show who was touting it for weight reduction. After a few days of taking the supplement according to directions (400 mg 2x per day) I've actually dropped a couple of pounds. I have no idea if this will continue but it's sure worth a try. What I have notices and find even more rewarding is that I haven't had that mid-afternoon fog. Maybe keeping the energy level up is what is contributing to the pounds going down? The label says that GCA Green Coffee Bean extract contains no wheat, gluten, soybeans, dairy, egg, fish/shellfish, or peanuts/tree nuts and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The product is derived from green (meaning unroasted) coffee beans and offers a concentrated source of plant-derived antioxidants. All in all, the Jarrow Green Coffee Bean extract seems to be working for me. If things change in the future I'll post a further comment on this review but for now: A-OK.

3Green coffee beans and chlorogenic acid
By L. Knights
I thought reviewing a supplement would be a relatively easy thing to do, but it turns out it was somewhat difficult for me. I have so many questions that it is very hard to find the answers for.First I will say: if you believe all the Dr Oz hype about green coffee bean extract, then you should know that this product seems to meet the following criteria of his for a good supplement: It contains GCA, it lists 50% chlorogenic acids, one capsule is 400 mg. It does contain cellulose, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide. Dr Oz says no fillers, binders or artificial ingredients, and I'm a little unclear as to whether those are what he means or if those are going to be in every product. I opened a capsule and the powder inside was a yellowy color, not quite the green of a dried green coffee bean but not a sterile laboratory white, either. It had a very slight smell that didn't smell like any green coffee beans I've ever smelled (and I've smelled a lot, actually) but it's an extract so maybe I shouldn't expect it to.I was very curious about this product because I roast my own coffee at home. I order beans from a company called Sweet Maria's, a small supplier that travels all over the world sourcing green coffee beans from small farmers and cooperatives that grow fantastic beans with complex flavors and no pesticides. (I read some crazy thing online about how green coffee bean extract can't possibly cost less than 50 bucks or something like that because the beans they are extracted from can cost fifteen bucks - but at SM you can get a pound for as low as five bucks so that seems just crazy and wrong to me.)I wondered where the beans used to make the green coffee bean extract came from (I'm guessing not small farmers in arrangements done "over the farm gate", otherwise they would brag about it on the bottle) and wondered if there was some way to use the wonderful beans I always have on hand to get the same effect. The Oz show about GCBE (green coffee bean extract, I'm tired of typing it out!) was something I hadn't seen before, so I looked it up on his website to find out what the hype was all about. I watched a show that looked really big and impressive with him doing a placebo controlled study that showed women losing a pound a week when taking the GCBE and losing just half a pound a week on the placebo. I guess the women taking the placebo lost weight because they were journaling their food intake? Overall I found the study to be pretty weak - I think any scientist would laugh at it - and it was only two weeks long! Even on the dr oz website it says "understand that no pill is more effective than maintaining a regular exercise regimen and maintaining a healthy diet." and that makes sense to me...I mean, one pound a week you could lose by just going for a one hour walk once a day and eating one less cookie or something. And as human beings we are designed to be active and to exercise and of course it can only improve our health overall to eat better. Apparently there were other studies, though - studies that went 16 weeks or more done by independent researchers. I looked up those studies and they are also quite easy to pick apart. They really look like ALL the weight loss effect - which overall came to less than a pound a week but still added up over time - was mainly from journaling food intake.Still, it seems like there might be some benefit to health in taking chlorogenic acid. And, from what I've read green coffee beans (not the extract, the whole beans) contain 6.5% chlorogenic acid and roasted coffee actually DOES contain it as well. Some people have made it sound like ALL the chlorogenic acid is destroyed in roasting but it's actually not. The question is: how much coffee would you have to drink to get the same amount of chlorogenic acid as in the recommended dosage? (The recommended dosage I've read is 3 400mg capsules, but this Jarrow product actually says to take 2 capsules a day. I'm comparing brewed coffee with 3 capsules.) Brewed coffee still contains 2.5% chlorogenic acid, and estimates range from 7 oz. to 16 oz. of brewed coffee that you'd have to drink to equal the GCBE. Personally, I do consume about that much coffee a day, from freshly roasted beans, so I think this supplement is really not for me.Still, I was thinking...is there some way to use the coffee beans still green? I did find some recipes online for brewing them into a tea, which is actually what was done with them by some cultures many years ago before anyone thought to roast them (and after some people started roasting them as well) but not much other than that. In my opinion, making a tea out high quality green beans and drinking it in place of green tea is probably better than taking the extract capsules.I did take these capsules for a little while and I thought I felt a tiny boost in energy a while after taking them but didn't notice any difference on the scale.

3Less Than Phenomenal
By R. Chaffey
I was interested in trying these capsules after hearing radio commercials about the green coffee bean phenomenon. Thinking they could help me shed a few pounds, I thought I would try them out. I eat fairly healthy and work out on a regular basis, but still I did not observe an above normal weight loss using this supplement. However, my energy seems to have increased, though this may or may not have been result of the supplement, which I do not think I will purchase again.
